Because Tooth Spa in Sunnyvale cares about the health of your teeth and mouth, we recommend a thorough dental hygiene routine. The formula for good oral hygiene is simple. Brush at least twice a day and floss each time that you brush. The most important thing is creating a habit that makes it easy for you to do and remember.
Regular Brushing
Brush at least twice a day. It’s always best to brush after your last meal or drink of the morning and night. Drinking water after brushing is fine, but don’t eat or drink any sugary substances after brushing at night otherwise, the sugar will have the chance to attack your teeth all night long.
The best toothbrush to use is one that has a small enough head to be able to reach all areas of your mouth. Soft bristles are best as they are flexible enough to reach all areas and crevices. Electric or battery-operated toothbrushes give your brushing a real boost, but don’t feel bad if you don’t have one, remember, the important part is creating the habit and sticking to it.
Brushing Techniques
Brushing should take a full 2-3 minutes. This is where many fall short in their brushing habits. To ensure you are brushing for the full 2-3 minutes, turn the radio on and brush through a complete song. Time yourself at least once, you will probably be surprised how little time you’re actually spending brushing your teeth. Most people find they are only brushing for less than 2 minutes, but it’s impossible to do a thorough job in that amount of time.
When you brush, hold your brush at an angle down towards your gums and brush each tooth with short strokes. The outside, top, and inside of each tooth should be brushed. Create your own habit for the pattern of brushing. For good oral hygiene, brush your tongue, gums, and cheeks.
Floss Every Time That You Brush
Flossing is commonly skipped, but this is a big mistake. Your toothbrush simply cannot get between your teeth or below your gum lines like floss can. If you brush your teeth multiple times a day but never floss, you’re missing a lot of hidden bacteria and plaque. Flossing can be done with the new preloaded flossing sticks or, with standard floss on a roll. Again, the type isn’t as important as creating the habit and using the proper technique.
When you floss, you should slide the floss down between your teeth. Hold the floss ends first towards the front of your mouth creating a “C” shape to hug your tooth as it slides down and so that it can easily get below the gum line, repeat with the “C” in the other direction to hug the other tooth. Do this between every tooth. It doesn’t take that long, and it removes hidden food, bacteria and keeps your gums healthy. It also allows your brushing to be more effective.
Good Habits Start Early
If you have children, help them create good oral hygiene habits. Put some music on and brush together to help them know how long to brush. Put a stool in the bathroom so they can see themselves brush in the mirror and can duplicate your motions. Floss their teeth for them. Keep it fun and create a ritual that your children will look forward to as they grow older.
