Dental emergencies can arise at any time and can be unpredictability worse at times and better at others. It is best not to wait as symptoms and conditions may worsen. Even with the best hygiene and care, tooth problems can arise that may or may not present with pain.
Common presentations of concern can include:
Pain With Bite / Temperature or Spontaneous Pain
A cavity is a common reason. But there are many other issues including, loose restorations, cracks, infections, or even gum recession. It is important to contact our office for an appointment to determine the cause.
Chipped Tooth
If a tooth becomes chipped or broken for any reason it should be repaired as soon as possible to prevent a root canal or even tooth loss.
Tooth Loss
If a tooth is accidentally knocked out, it should be recovered and placed in a container of milk or held between the tongue and cheek while in transit to our office. In some cases, it can be successfully placed back into the socket if treated immediately and there is minimal or no damage to the root.
Bleeding or Swollen Gums
A common sign of gingivitis or periodontitis. Swollen gums that bleed may indicate an underlying issue of infection and bone loss surrounding the tooth. Gum disease, if left untreated, leads to increase in risk of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure. Gum disease is not to be treated lightly.
Changes in the Color of a Tooth
A tooth that is becoming noticeably discolored or gray in appearance should be seen for possible infection within the nerve and a root canal may be necessary to clear the infection.
